Music in New Orlean for Friday, July 31, 2015: My Morning Jacket at Champions Square

On Friday, July 31, the options for live music include an adventurous modern Southern rock band at Champions Square, and a much respected Japanese trumpeter in town for this weekend's Satchmo Summerfest.

My Morning Jacket, Bold Sphere Music at Champions Square, 7:30 p.m.

When not collaborating with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the members of Louisville quintet My Morning Jacket craft sometimes haunted, sometimes raucous and always adventurous modern Southern rock. On May 4, My Morning Jacket released "The Waterfall," the band's first album of new material in four years, and seventh overall. It was recorded in a studio perched on a cliff overlooking Stinson Beach and the Pacific Ocean in northern California. Singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter Jim James has said, "Stinson Beach was so psychedelic and focused. It was almost like we lived on our own little moon out there. It feels like you're up in the sky." Back down on earth, he and his bandmates are joined by Lucius at Champions Square.

Yoshio Toyama & the Dixie Saints, Snug Harbor, 8 and 10 p.m.

Yoshio Toyama is often billed as the Louis Armstrong of Japan, with good reason. He has dedicated his life to mastering Armstrong's music. He made his first pilgrimages to Preservation Hall in the 1960s; he and his band, the Dixie Saints, return to New Orleans each year for Satchmo Summerfest, where, in defiance of the heat and humidity, they generally wear white tuxedo jackets. He speaks English with a heavy Japanese accent – he often prefaces songs with Armstrong facts and anecdotes -- but that accent disappears when he scats and sings in the Satchmo style.

As Cities Burn, House of Blues, 5:30 p.m.

The Christian hardcore band As Cities Burn formed in Mandeville and released its debut album, "Son, I Loved You at Your Darkest," in 2005. The band broke up several years later, but was subsequently "resurrected." As Cities Burn has hit the road to mark the 10th anniversary of its first album, aka "SILYAYD." They headline an early, all-ages show at the HOB that also features Emery, Listener and Foreign Sons.
