Important Things Humans Should Know (Dirty Bourbon River Show , 2015)
Important Things Humans Should Know showcases the hybrid jambalaya cooked by New Orleans band Dirty Bourbon River Show. The group mixes New Orleans jazz with blues, humorous and zany lyrics, Balkan influences, cumbia, operatic vocals, playing various instruments at the same time, stage props, and theatrical performance.
The Dirty Bourbon River Show includes New Orleans natives as well musicians who moved to the area attracted by its distinct culture. The group was founded by multi-instrumentalist Noah Adams. “I got swept away by amazing players like Dr. John, Fats Waller, Huey Smith,” Adams explains. “I spent three years just shedding and absorbing stuff.”
The band’s live shows feature a ringmaster and vaudeville-style sketches. Dirty Bourbon River Show changes tempo, key, styles, so it develops like a story. The group includes a lot of jazz with the intention of being a gateway to jazz for their audiences. “It’s just not listened to enough anymore, and New Orleans is where it was born,” says Adams.
The Dirty Bourbon River Show includes Noah Adams on vocals, piano, guitar, accordion, trumpet; Matt Thomas on vocals, tenor and baritone saxophone, clarinet; Jimmy Williams on bass, sousaphone; and Dane “Bootsy” Schindler on drums.
Important Things Humans Should Know is an unexpected collage that celebrates New Orleans jazz and its musical melting pot.
