The New Orleans-based Dirty Bourbon River Show is spreading the word about “Important Things Humans Should Know,” the name of the group’s tour that’s coming to Eugene on Thursday.
The band, formed in 2009, creates a sound through an eccentric meld of music — hard-edge blues with piano-driven ballads and New Orleans brass — that it calls New Orleans Big Brass Circus Rock.
Not surprisingly, based on that description, that the group’s live performances (it has had more than 700) have a theatrical, vaudeville old-time medicine show flair, with occasional fireballs, group chants and stomps — not to mention whiskey pours.
The close group shares instruments, switching up what they’re playing mid-show, even mid-song.
The Dirty Bourbon River Show is Noah Adams (vocals, piano, guitar, accordion, trumpet), Matt Thomas (vocals, tenor and baritone saxophone, clarinet), Jimmy Williams (bass, sousaphone), Dane “Bootsy” Schindler (drums) and Sandra Love (backup vocals, percussion, wind toys).
The group has released nine studio albums. The most recent is April’s “Important Things Humans Should Know.”
You can catch the circus at 9 p.m. Thursday at Sam Bond’s Garage, 407 Blair Blvd. It’s $7 at the door.
Roots-rock-reggae pioneers Black Slate play Cottage Grove
COTTAGE GROVE — Known for helping bring the British Reggae sound to popularity in the 1970s and 1980s, roots-rock-reggae band Black Slate has reunited and is coming to The Axe & Fiddle on Monday.
The group was formed in 1974 with musicians from England, Jamaica and Anguilla. It proceeded to deliver such songs — including “Amigo,” “Sticksman” and “Mind Your Motion” — that blended reggae beats with its unique sound.
Black Slate delivered several albums before deciding to stop touring in the mid-1980s.
Fast forward to 2011, when the original band members, who remained close over the years, got back together.
Founding members Anthony Brightly (keyboards and vocals), Chris Hanson (guitar), and Desmond Mahoney (drums) added Colin McNeish (bass guitar), F Junior (vocals), Jesse Brade (vocals), and Horace Burke (keyboards).
The new lineup has released two full-length albums: “Midnight” in 2013 and “World Citizen” in 2014.
One Dollar Check will open the 9 p.m. Monday show at the Axe & Fiddle, 657 E. Main St.
It’s $10 at the door.
