ALAMOSA — The San Luis Valley Origami group will be folding a variety of animal models, from beginner to intermediate levels of difficulty, on Saturday, June 6 at the Alamosa Public Library, 300 Hunt Ave. in Alamosa. For adults and teenagers 13 years old and older the meeting will be 10-11:30 a.m. For children 12 years old and younger the meeting will be 1-2:30 p.m. Parents are requested to stay with their child.
The meetings are free, and origami paper will be supplied.
DEL NORTE — The Rio Grande County Museum and Cultural Center in Del Norte is hosting the first art show done by Saguache artist James Worley continuing through June 26. The opening reception will be on Saturday, June 6 from 1-4 p.m.
ALAMOSA — The Upper Rio Grande Animal Society will benefit from a yard sale sponsored by Dell’s Insurance Agency, Inc. in front of the agency, 510 Bell Avenue in Alamosa, on Saturday June 6 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Along with a variety of “treasures” for sale, they will also sell baked goods, homemade breakfast burritos, ice cold soft drinks, bottled water, plus raffle for gifts donated by local businesses. CRESTONE — Earth Knack Stone-Age Living Skills will host a free open house at their school site in Crestone from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 6 with hands-on workshops on many of the skills they teach. Attendees should bring a lunch, snacks, water bottle, sunscreen, hat, and layers, and are invited to join instructors for a potluck dinner around the campfire after the event. LA GARITA — Pilots from around the state and nation will touchdown in planes of all makes and models at the La Garita Creek Ranch, Center’s Leach Airport’s and Hooper’s Sand Dunes Swimming Pool on Saturday. SAND DUNES — Great Sand Dunes hosts Junior Ranger Day on Saturday, June 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for kids of all ages to participate in exploratory activities at the visitor center and the dunefield. SOUTH FORK—Bingo sponsored by the South Fork Chamber of Commerce will begin on June 9 and will be held every Tuesday throughout the summer (ending Aug. 25) at the South Fork Community Center. CRESTONE — Dirty Bourbon River Show will perform in Crestone at 7 p.m. on June 10 at Cloud Station. This is bluesy brass, gritty rock, and punk-ish cabaret fit for a steamy street parade.

ALAMOSA — The Alamosa Optimist Club and Splashland Hot Springs are co-sponsoring a “Youth Swim Day” on Thursday, June 11 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Cost of admission is $3 PLUS TWO non-perishable canned good items for youth 18 years of age and under, and $5 PLUS TWO non-perishable canned good items for swimmers 19 years of age and older. All food will benefit the Food Bank Network of the San Luis Valley. Those who are not swimming but wish to enter the facility will pay $3 entry fee. MONTE VISTA – Valley youth ages 5 to 7 are invited to participate in Cloverbuds, a fun activity-focused youth development program, run by San Luis Valley 4-H. The first meeting will take place on June 13, from 1:30-3 p.m. at the San Luis Valley Area Extension Office in Monte Vista, and will feature hands-on activities related to the world of farm animals. MONTE VISTA — The Ray Hinton Livestock Jackpot will be held on Saturday, June 13, at 11:30 a.m. at the Ski Hi Complex in Monte Vista. MONTE VISTA —Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge Kids Fishing Day is on Saturday, June 13 at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. To get to the fishing pond from the town of Monte Vista, travel eight miles south on Highway 15 to the 8 South Road. Turn and go approximately one mile west and follow the signs to parking. The event is free, open to kids 16 years or younger, but all kids must be accompanied by an adult. ALAMOSA — The Alamosa County Chamber of Commerce annual Independence Day Parade is coming up soon. The theme for this year’s parade is “A Healthy Altitude.” The chamber is anxious to help organizations take part in this parade so it can be the best ever. The parade will be held on Saturday, July 4, and the registration deadline is Friday, June 26, at 5 p.m. Registration fee is $30 for chamber members, $35 for non-chamber members and $65 for groups with 3-9 vehicles. CONEJOS COUNTY — The Conejos County Board of County Commissioners will make available to the landowners of Conejos County a free dumping site for tree branches, limbs, grasses, bushes, and other shrubbery ONLY. No processed lumber, household trash, plastics, or tires will be accepted. The site is located approximately 4.5 miles east of Manassa on the north side of Highway 142. VALLEY — The family of Nathaniel J. Chacon has opened a benefit account at San Luis Valley Federal Bank. Nathaniel had a stroke recently and is recovering at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver. CREEDE — The Creede Arts Council is sponsoring the Mountain Shoot Out a regional juried photography show this summer. Photographers from Southern Colorado are eligible to submit up to three original photos utilizing any photographic process, traditional or digital, black & white or color. The deadline for submissions is June 8. There are both a youth and adult category. In addition to first, second and third place prizes, special awards will be given to select photographs that focus on Colorado landscape. ANTONITO — Free Zumba classes for all ages are held at Guadalupe Elementary in Antonito Monday - Thursday from 6:15-7 p.m. in the cafeteria.
ALAMOSA — The City of Alamosa Yard Waste Pick up program has resumed. Cost is $5/month, which includes the city provided green yard waste container. The city will continue to pick up weekly on Mondays. The charge will be added to utility bills. Yard waste can also be disposed of for no charge at the recycling center at the east end of Twelfth Street. This site will reopen on Sundays from 12-4 p.m. for summer hours. Those interested in joining the yard waste pick up program may call the Public Works Office at 589-6631.
ALAMOSA — The Alamosa Senior Citizens sell Safeway and City Market Gift cards and receive 5 percent of the sales to make a little money for the center. Stop at the center at 92 Colorado Ave. (north end of Cole Park, Alamosa) and purchase one. The cards are great for groceries, prescriptions or gas as well as gifts.
DEL NORTE — Want to help preserve the history of Rio Grande County? That opportunity is available through the Rio Grande County Museum and Cultural Center in Del Norte, which needs summertime volunteers to help with greeting visitors, doing exhibits, inventory and computer work. Also the Rio Grande County Museum, Inc. is looking for board members to help with funding-raising, grant writing and other activities. Contact the museum at 657-2847. ALAMOSA — The Alamosa Police Department will now provide citizens with dog licenses on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The cost is $2 for spayed and neutered dogs, and $10 for unaltered. A current proof of rabies vaccination is required.
LA JARA — Toddler Time will be at The Conejos Library in La Jara on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. It is beneficial for parents to read to their children and this provides an excellent opportunity to get started. Free to the public.
LA JARA — The Conejos County Library District is pleased with its Antonito branch and looking for a place to buy in Capulin for a branch there, according to Librarian Marie DeHerrera. A summer reading program has been conducted in Capulin and it has grown to the point that the library needs a place of its own. Grant money is being sought for the project. Call 274-5858.

ALAMOSA — A newly established confidential support group for people struggling with change will take place the first and third Monday of the month in room one of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Parish Center at 6 p.m. Changing from the Inside Out, facilitated by Luis Murrillo, will provide topics that will lead to conversations about individual struggles with change. VALLEY — La Puente’s Outreach Services Center has received a grant that can assist local veterans with a variety of services including medical and non-medical gas vouchers, provisions for their home, interview or work clothing, and help with tuition or job training. Gas vouchers to appointments can be provided for within the San Luis Valley and the state of Colorado. Veterans assisted with this grant must have documented proof of their honorable or OTH discharge status either through their DD-214 paperwork or a letter from a V.A.’s office. ALAMOSA — La Puente’s homeless shelter serves three meals per day, 365 days a year to guests and community members. Even though La Puente serves more than 45,000 meals each year, the shelter does not have a food budget and relies solely on the kindness and generosity of the community. VALLEY — The Saguache County Veteran Service Office is pleased to announce that homeless veterans and other veterans in financial need can receive help thanks to a five county grant administered by the Chaffee County Veteran Service Office. MONTE VISTA – The San Luis Valley 4-H Robotics is looking for used laptop donations to help with expansion of their youth robotics program. Donated laptops should run Microsoft Windows XP or later or Mac OS 10.6 or later, and have 1 GB of ram and at least a 1 GHz processor. MONTE VISTA—Tri County Seniors, 311 Washington St. in Monte Vista, are hosting line dance classes every Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. for only $1 per class. New students are welcome. These are for all ages.
ALAMOSA — La Puente Home is requesting hygiene kits to assist the less fortunate of the San Luis Valley. Often guests arrive at the homeless shelter without even the most basic of necessities. For this reason, La Puente provides kits full of hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, razors, shaving cream, toothbrush and paste, deodorant, and a washcloth.
